Alonzo Mourning

Currently in his ninth season in the NBA, Alonzo Morning is the "Center of Attention." Alonzo's successful career can be credited to his tenacious play, leadership and consistent maturity as an athlete and humanitarian.

Upon graduating from Georgetown University in 1992 with a degree in sociology, he was selected the second overall pick by the Charlotte Hornets. Now an integral part of the Miami Heat, Alonzo also played a critical role as a member of the U.S. team in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

Off the court, Alonzo has dedicated himself to creating positive and lasting change in the lives of children. He has focused his community involvement on becoming an outspoken advocate for youth initiatives and foster care programs that help abused, neglected and abandoned kids.

Alonzo believes his passion for helping children is most directly related to his admiration of his foster mother, Fanny Threet. He vividly remembers the guidance and direction that she gave him as a child. Mrs. Threet, as well as countless others, has made a tremendous impact on Alonzo's life and as a result he is committed to making a difference in the lives of children.

Upon entering the National Basketball Association (NBA), Alonzo became the national spokesperson for the prevention of child abuse and the NBA's Healthy Family America Program. At every Miami Heat game, 30 children get free seats in the Zo Zone and he donates $100 per blocked shot to the Children's Home Society and Jackson Memorial Hospital.

In 1997, Alonzo founded Zo's Summer Groove (ZSG), an annual charity event that benefits the Children's Home Society and 100 Black Men of South Florida. To date, ZSG has donated over $1 million to South Florida communities and charities. ZSG has also refurbished five basketball courts so kids can have a safe place to play.

In addition to their charitable activities, Alonzo and his wife, Tracy, enjoy spending time with their two children. In 1999, they received the Children's Home Society's R. David Thomas Child Advocate of the Year Award.
