Young People Need Families: Practice Strategies to Make Permanence a Priority

May 01, 2008

Today, young people in foster care, especially those at risk of aging out, face daunting challenges. But for many, being disconnected from family or being without it is the most pressing.

This essay, presented at the 2008 National Convening on Youth Permanence, describes how young people in foster care need family plus – families with strong relationships plus effective preparation for adulthood, including life skills development; a strong education coupled with job readiness and career planning; and access to quality housing and health care. This document was developed by the Annie E. Casey Foundation/Casey Family Services and Casey Family Programs
