FAMILIES
FOR A LIFETIME:
The National Convening on Youth Permanence
Thank you for your interest in the National Convening on Youth
Permanence and the vital goal of family permanence for all
children and youth in the country’s foster care system.
In 2006, the Convening focused on older children (ages 11
and 12) and youth (ages 13 to 18) in state care, a population
that represents more than half of all youth in the system.
The Annie E.
Casey Foundation and its direct service agency, Casey
Family Services, are honored to serve as the lead sponsors
of this ongoing gathering of child welfare leaders.
“Families for Life: Addressing the Needs of Older
Children and Youth in Foster Care” occurred from
September 12 through 15, at the Renaissance Washington, DC
Hotel, in the nation’s capital.
Taking part in an extraordinary series of discussions and
learning sessions were child welfare commissioners and directors
from across the country, as well as tribal leaders, youth
and families, attorneys and judges, politicians and policymakers,
mental health practitioners, and journalists.

the convening was comprised of three primary events, including:

Family permanence is a key theme of the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s
work with young people in foster care. It has been directly
addressing this critical issue for youth through the activities
of Casey Family Services, its Family
to Family sites, and the Jim
Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative, in addition to its
reform efforts with public systems and child welfare services
across the country. Therefore, the Foundation is pleased to
advance this important work by sponsoring the National Convening
on Youth Permanence in 2006 and in coming years.
