October 17, 2011
Fostering Media Connections, an initiative to change the national conversation about foster care, recently highlighted an innovative program for young parents in state custody operated by Casey Family Services’ Maryland Division. In the video, Tellita, age 18, shares a glimpse of her life as a mom who also lives is in foster care with her baby. This young person has spend a year in the Casey program, that helps young parents in foster care remain connected safely with their children while preparing them for life as adults as well.
According to experts, programs such as these have the potential to reduce repeated teen pregnancies and future instances of child abuse. They also are critical to breaking the cycle in which some young people coming out of foster care end up having their own children enter the system due to abuse and neglect.
