PORTLAND, MAINE – For the fourth consecutive year, staff members at Prudential Financial held a “Backpack Challenge” to prepare local children and youth in foster care for the new school year.

As part of this year’s effort, 22 backpacks were donated to the children and youth served by Casey Family Services in Portland. The backpacks came in all shapes, colors, and sizes and were filled with school supplies, health and beauty products, and other items such as flashlights, cameras, and stuffed animals.

“Casey staff members are excited when the backpacks arrive each summer,” says Rana O’Connor, a recruiter of foster and adoptive families for the child welfare agency. “Our social workers have identified a number of children who need help with their back-to-school preparation. What a treat for them to show up with new backpacks chock full of surprises!”

Each year, the young recipients send thank you notes – hand written or drawn – for the Prudential staff.”

“It’s a true win-win for all of us, and a simple way to bring some joy to a child in need,” O’Connor says.
