LOWELL, MA — Casey Family Services is joining with the University of Massachusetts at Lowell to celebrate National Foster Care Month from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on May 7, in the school’s O’Leary Library.
During the event, Susan Rooney, the team leader for Casey’s Collaborative Permanency Planning Service, will participate on a panel: “The Role of Play in the Development of Children in Foster Care.”
Other presenters include Massachusetts Families for Kids’ Speak Out Team, the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families, and the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. These experts will discuss ways in which individuals and the campus community can contribute to the welfare of children, as well as career options for students interested in related professions.
During the event, organizers at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell will be collecting new shoes. All footwear collected will be donated to child welfare agencies involved in the foster care system. In all, the group hopes to receive more than 8,000 pairs of shoes, one for each child in care.
This is the university’s third annual celebration of National Foster Care Month.
