PORTLAND, ME — Rana O’Connor, a foster and adoptive parent recruiter for Casey Family Services, is celebrating her first anniversary as a featured blogger on Raising Maine, an online resource for moms produced by MaineToday.com. Through her regular posts, she shares her experience of helping connect children from foster care to lifelong families.
O’Connor’s online column, “Foster Notes,” is one of the featured blog on Raising Maine. The site helps Maine moms connect with each other and share ideas, find resources, and chat about the joys and pitfalls of raising children. Raising Maine also focuses on women too, who often forget their own needs in place of their children’s.
O’Connor has recruited families and individuals to provide foster and adoptive care with Casey Family Services for more than 18 years. When she started, her own girls were almost 7 and 6 months old. Her youngest just graduated from high school, and she has met many many families in the interim, coaching them through the process to become foster families. “My greatest kick at work comes from connecting kids in need to families that care,” O’Connor says.
“Foster Notes” launched during National Foster Care Month 2008 last May. Since then, O’Connor has written more than 40 blog posts on the experiences of the families she’s helped to create and child welfare issues affecting Maine families.
Raising Maine is part of the Blethen Maine Newspapers’ online division, which includes: MaineToday.com, Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, Kennebec Journal, Morning Sentinel, and more.
