Grants Aimed at Supporting New Haven Families

The Annie E. Casey Foundation and its direct service agency, Casey Family Services, today announced the fourth year of its annual grants program in the city of New Haven. Nearly $250,000 will be awarded to a wide range of not-for-profit and community-serving organizations that work directly with disadvantaged children, youth, and families in New Haven. In 2007, 10 to 15 grants between $2,000 and $20,000 will be awarded, as well as two $50,000 grants for two or more organizations that collaborate on improving the economic futures of families.

“Last year, the Casey Foundation awarded its first $50,000 collaboration grant in New Haven, motivating two local agencies to join together in helping to elevate the economic success of vulnerable families,” says Douglas W. Nelson, president of the Annie E. Casey Foundation. “By offering two such grants in 2007, the Foundation extends its legacy of building stronger communities that enrich the lives of children and families. Our grants program is an essential part of our long-term commitment to the city.”

In addition to the two collaboration grants, the Casey Foundation is again accepting applications for direct service grants for agencies that work directly with children, youth, and families in a number of ways. In the first three years of this program, nearly $750,000 has been invested in more than 46 local organizations, according to Raymond L. Torres, executive director of Casey Family Services.

“Children need healthy, nurturing families and communities in order to grow and thrive,” says Torres. “We want to support local solutions to the challenges that are facing families in New Haven, and we’re excited about the opportunities for enrichment that we can create together.”

Letters of intent from applicants for the direct services grants program were due on February 2, 2007. Letters of intent and applications for the collaboration grant are still being accepted, however. Initial documents for the collaboration grant are due by 5 p.m. on March 9, with final proposals due on April 13.

The Annie E. Casey Foundation is the nation’s largest private foundation devoted exclusively to improving the lives of disadvantaged children and families in the United States. It was established in 1948 by Jim Casey, one of the co-founders of UPS. In 1976, the Foundation established its direct service agency, Casey Family Services. Today, with headquarters in New Haven, Casey Family Services is helping children build lifelong families through a continuum of permanency services, including family preservation, family reunification, foster care, adoption, and post-adoption, throughout New England and Baltimore, Maryland.
