2010 New Haven Direct Services Grants Program Awards $410,250

The 2010 New Haven Direct Services Grants Program, funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, awarded 10 nonprofit organizations $410,250 in grants to serve vulnerable children, youth, and families in New Haven. Now in its seventh year, the program received 55 proposals totaling over $1 million in grant requests. This year’s grant recipients are:

Achievement First: $25,000 to help students master fundamental math and reading skills so that they have the knowledge and confidence to pass rigorous state exams and excel in Achievement First’s college preparatory curriculum.

Boys & Girls Club: $25,000 to provide low-income families with quality out-of-school care for children ages 5 to 14 and to assist parents and guardians in maintaining employment.

Catholic Charities: $25,000 to increase Latino parent-child interaction, improve family relationships through a robust scientifically-based family literacy program, and enhance the school readiness program.

Community Health Network Foundation: $10,000 to provide pregnant and young parenting women an eight-week nutrition and cooking class in which parents can learn about the children’s nutritional needs, food budgeting, and accessing publicly and privately funded food services.

Fair Haven Community Health Center: $25,000 to improve the mental health and well-being of adolescents ages 13 to 21 in the Fair Haven Community through the development of a group model that provides adolescents with positive ways to express their feelings and cope with trauma and stress.

Hospital of Saint Raphael: $25,000 for a welfare-to-work job skills training program utilizing employee mentorship, volunteer placements, and skill building workshops to assist area TANF recipients and other low-income residents in preparing for gainful employment.

Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services (IRIS): $25,000 to assist refugee families in accessing quality, appropriate health care and to provide educational sessions that teach medical self-sufficiency to refugees.

Music Haven: $10,000 to provide music education for inner-city students and hold regular teaching and performance programs at accessible sites within New Haven neighborhoods.

Youth Continuum: $25,000 to engage homeless and former foster youth in building a house – from planning and design through construction – for low-income families in the community. 

Youth Rights Media: $25,000 to provide an intensive summer employment program designed to build the civic leadership and community organizing skills of 20 New Haven teens with a focus on raising awareness about high school graduation and dropout rates, as well as the lack of resources at alternative schools.
