Improving Lives of Foster Children
To the Editor:Thanks to the Valley News for its June 18 converge of Casey Family Services relocation to downtown White River Junction [Vermont] and its open house celebration. Reporter Gregory Trotter viewed the move as an occasion to learn more about the organization and its mission. He got it right when he described the challenges of finding permanent homes for youth in foster care.
Finding the right permanent family for each youth is critical, and it’s a piece of work that Casey staff don’t take lightly. They proceed thoughtfully to ensure the smoothest transition and best outcome for both the children and the families. The kids Casey supports tend to be older with behavior and emotional issues that are the result of trauma and disappointment. The organization supports foster and adoptive families every step of the way with training, therapy and financial assistance.
One foster father from Chelsea said that parenting a Casey youth is the most rewarding experience he’s had, hands down. “You are these kids’ life jacket. If you can handle the unexpected and patiently weather some emotional storms, you can bear witness to an incredible transformation that speaks to human resiliency – once a child’s needs are met and there is an adult who can be trusted.” He added that, without a foster child in his home, “I revert to my old whiny self who complains that the coffee doesn’t taste right. Fostering makes me a better person, calms my spirit and makes me appreciate everything in my life so much more.”
There are many ways to improve the lives of foster youth in your community – ranging from becoming a full-time foster or adoptive parent to providing weekend respite for foster parents, or making a commitment to mentor a youth. If you want to learn more about how to help youth in our community, please call Casey Family Services (802.296.8900) or, better yet, stop by and visit our new office at 35 Railroad Row in White River Junction.
