For more than 30 years, Casey Family Services has worked with children and youth in the foster care system. Each day, we marvel at their resiliency and spirit. More important, we recognize that these children and youth need a family – not just a home. Family is a bridge of hope for youth in foster care, a connection that bolsters and nurtures them throughout life.

There are a variety of ways you can parent a child in foster care. As a foster parent, you may help a child return to his or her birth family or other relatives. You might also help a child move to an adoptive family, or become an adoptive family yourself.

Legally connecting children in foster care to a family that meets their physical and emotional needs is called permanence. Casey uses the word in many ways – permanency teams, permanency planning, permanency goals – but all mean a child has a family that will love and support him or her beyond foster care, and provide a sense of belonging and a legal family relationship for a lifetime.
