The Annie E. Casey Foundation
Headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, the Annie E. Casey Foundation works to promote the well-being of our nation’s most vulnerable children. Its primary mission is to foster public policies, human services, and community supports that more effectively meet the needs of vulnerable children and families.
Established in 1948 by UPS cofounder Jim Casey and his siblings in honor of their mother, the Foundation’s first grants supported a camp for disadvantaged children near the Casey family home in Seattle, Washington. Later, Jim Casey steered the Foundation’s efforts toward finding more stable, permanent homes for children.
Today, with assets of more than $2 billion and annual grants of $190 million, the Foundation is one of the largest private foundations in the nation. In addition to grant making, the Foundation embraces a variety of approaches – reforming public systems and building economic security to support children, families, and communities – to achieve its goals.
Child and Family Services
The Casey Foundation’s direct service efforts aim to make a tangible difference by demonstrating that cost-effective services can help create lifelong family connections for disadvantaged children.
Jim Casey established the program that later became Casey Family Services. Operating today as the Foundation’s direct service agency, Casey Family Services works with families and child welfare professionals to help ensure that every child has a safe, nurturing, and permanent family. The Casey Foundation also supports the direct service work of the Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative.
Making Grants
The Casey Foundation supports diverse efforts to build better futures for millions of children at risk of poor educational, economic, social, and health outcomes. Grant making is limited to initiatives in states, cities, and neighborhoods in the United States that have significant potential to demonstrate innovative and cost-effective policies, services, and community supports.
Major Initiatives
The Casey Foundation’s approach to grant making focuses on making multi-year, multi-site investments in long-term strategies and partnerships that strengthen families and communities.
