Youth and
Family Perspectives

“I enjoy working with [Iowa's] Department of Human Services because it feels like someone is finally listening to me, and they aren't just listening, they are actually doing something about it.”
— Lorisha, Elevate2Inspire, Iowa

Iowa's Elevate2Inspire, a unique partnership, is active on multiple fronts: as advocates for the needs of young people in foster care, as trainers in partnership with their state agency, as producers of commercials promoting foster parent recruitment and legislative activists.

Involving Foster Care Alumni

The Foster Care Alumni of America (FCAA) estimates 12 million Americans have experienced foster care, and that their ranks will grow by approximately 250,000 young people each year if foster care entries and exits remain steady. Remember the expertise of these individuals as you engage in reforming foster care and improving permanency planning.

Some resources for connecting with foster care alumns:

  • Foster Care Alumni of America
  • Engaging Alumni of Foster Care
  • One alum’s perspective on the need to involve alumns
  • Views of stakeholders--including former foster youth--on foster care
  • Project FYSH involves current and former foster youth

Data Snapshots

A growing number of foster care alumni are organizing to improve foster care.
