Performance Arts Troupe
The 2005 Performance Arts Troupe hosted its Spring Recital on June 14. The spring session focused on Cultural West African Drumming and Creative Arts by teaching artists Tunisi Jack Davis, Vallorie Clark, several Life Skills' youth volunteers and a youth from the Volunteer Program.
The opening of the recital featured our Troupe's creative artwork displayed in a gallery atmosphere. The gallery was accessorized with unique hand-crafted cultural masks, paper maiche vases, scented picture frames and ethnic tile art. Hand-painted expressive T-shirts were worn by the youth and teachers.
Family, friends and staff were delighted to see the unique designs these talented youth had created. They were also dazzled by youth volunteers who catered and served delightful appetizers.
The recital concluded with pulsating and rhythmic African Drumming by our Troupe with patterns displayed in assorted sequences. They then performed a variety of dramatized poetry readings and affirmations while accompanied by the heart-felt beat of the drums that kept the audience on the edge of their seats. It was evident by this theatrical expression that the youth felt encouraged and empowered.
It was a breathtaking performance that left you feeling quite inspired thinking that "Art is a story yet untold." Our youth, in their own uniqueness, told a story of ability, ambition and confidence.
